Brain drain, and the mass exodus of Nigerian Professionals; Signs of bleak future for the country.

For everyone about to read this, my caption alone is enough to understand what the body of the write-up would be about. And maybe giving it much more meaning more than I could have rightly explained here.

It is no longer news that Nigerian youths and the professionals therein are jetting out of the country in their large numbers on a daily basis.

News even has it that, the United State Embassy is all booked up till ‘forever’, as I cannot even begin to wrap my head around the stated booking period in the news.

No gainsaying, not less than 70% of highly skilled individuals around me when interviewed are willing to dump all what they seem to have achieved, to travel out of Nigeria. They admitted to not be afraid to begin again in any country other than here.

And if you would agree with me, it is nearly the same amongst all the youths of the soil and for those around you too.

But are we going to blame them? Times are hard. From high-rise unemployment rate, to double digit inflation rate, consistent insecurity in the land, just to mention a few.

And if it wasn’t for patriotism or lack of an alternative, no reasonable human would love to live in such a country like Nigeria, not when all pointers are even screaming no solution. I hate to say it keeps getting worse.

Meanwhile, it has been established several times that the best resources of a nation is the human resources, unfortunately however, our best hands who are supposed to develop the country are the ones jetting out the most.

And funnily enough, the host countries of our countrymen seem to be extracting the best ones. They’re putting them through so much examination(s), brain test and that of intelligence and much more scrutiny just to ensure the best are brought over to further develop their own country. How sad!!!

Not to mention our resources that they deplete in cash to further boost theirs.

Needless to say that those who travel to United Kingdom for instance, needs to have around 5 Million Naira in their bank account. An amount that can actually establish a business that’ll employ a minimum of 2 persons. (It could be as much as 5 persons, depending on the nature of the business).

Without any verifiable claim though, monies realized from our economy are not even used here in most cases, but are diverted, directly or otherwise to develop the economies of much developed nations.

In the long run however, the effect of this is not limited to the economy, but to the general well-being and peaceful existence of those of us citizens that remains here.

Imagine the number of Medical personnel that were trained here but relocates abroad on a daily basis. The figures are alarming.

And in a country that is short of health workers, is that not trouble brewing in for us already?

This is an unfortunate situation that we have found ourselves in.

Someone was even telling me recently that a department in one of the general hospitals in the South West was closed down because of the unavailability of specialists. And the question that is constantly on the lips of many is that, is it that our leaders do not see this or they do not just care?

The bitter truth is that, from the stance of our leaders, majority of them obviously does not care. No one with an iota of love for this country would conduct oneself governing in such a manner. All they evidently care about is what they and members of their immediately family stand to gain from the onward destruction of this country. Take a look at the way and manner that the children of politicians conduct themselves in Nigeria and abroad, you’d weep at the waste.

Conclusively however, bearing in mind that nobody in his or her right thinkable senses would want to leave his or her home and go to someone else’s home. This is saying that, if things were right and Nigeria was even half as live-able as ‘those’ countries, majority of those that are relocating would actually not want to, they simply want to survive and truly live.

I am looking forward to our leaders one day doing the needful, else, Nigeria itself would one day decide to travel abroad and we would all be homeless.

  1. Many Nigerians were optimistic that the situation of this country would be better. Unfortunately, their optimism have been affected by perpetual mismanagement of the country’s resources by politicians and many others who have access to these resources. Hence, many citizens have resolved to leave for a “better land”. I cannot blame them because the security of the country even deteriorates day by day. This is pathetic!

  2. Very great and heartfelt write-up you have here! An engineer, who once relocated to Australia with his family and business once said “how will I be able to explain to my children that hard work, integrity and education pay?”

This he said out of the much frustrations and disappointments he got trying to win contracts that he obviously merited, but such contracts are awarded to known quacks who are either relatives or friends of the political elites.
These quacks will eventually bring the job for him to execute after deducting a greater part of the funds for the project, leaving him with little or no profit at all.

Most people give up trying to fix this country because our issues are too systemic that truth will find it extremely different to prosper.

I’m sad to say that one of the most difficult things I’m doing this days is pray for Nigeria to change for the better.
