We really do sleep on how God provides for His own. When He steps in, He does it in a way that makes everyone stop and go,
“Wait, how did that just happen?”
It isn’t forced or predictable, but it’s always timely and precise.
Let’s take that temple tax story in Matthew 17:24–27.
They asked Jesus for money. Of course, He had none on Him, and He wasn’t about to get caught slipping. Jesus told Peter to go to the lake, cast his line, and open the mouth of the first fish he caught.
Inside the fish’s mouth? A coin? And it was just enough to settle the bill for both of them.
Simply put, a fish’s mouth was their bank?
How can anyone read that and not sit up and take notice?
Jesus doesn’t do things the usual way, he does not settle for ordinary. And what’s truly amazing is that He won’t let Himself or His children be made a joke or be looked down upon.
And in Elijah’s story in 1 Kings 17:4–6; There was famine, yet God didn’t let His prophet go hungry. Instead, He sent ravens (actual birds) to feed Elijah with bread and meat every morning and every evening. Like clockwork. And Elijah drank from a brook nearby.
I mean, come on, birds doing food delivery before it was a thing? That’s not just provision. That’s VIP room service in the middle of a drought.
What a flex.
And then the Israelites, fresh out of Egypt, wandering the wilderness, and hunger struck. But there’s no way God was going to deliver them from Pharaoh just to let them die of starvation in the wild. That’s not how God rolls. In Exodus 16:4–5, He told Moses He would rain down manna from heaven. Like, literal food from above.
In today’s language? He set up catering from heaven. Because when God says He’ll provide, He means business. David said it best: “Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of my enemies.” He doesn’t just provide, He makes a scene of it.
Let’s not forget the wedding at Cana, John 2:1–10. First miracle. Wine finished, Mary nudged Jesus, and even though He said His time hadn’t come, He still stepped in. He turned water into top-tier wine. So good that the guests were wondering why the best was being served last. They had no idea it was a miracle in their glass.
Jesus didn’t just save a wedding; He saved someone’s face. God’s provision protects you from shame too.
And then there are the verses that just hit different when you think about them properly.
Psalm 136:25: “He gives food to all flesh, for His mercy endures forever.”
Psalm 145:15: “The eyes of all look to You, and You give them their food at the proper time.”
Let’s pause. All flesh. That means everybody.
God feeds the entire population of this earth, every day, faithfully too.
This is no over-hyping, just facts.
So yes, God is a provider, but not just in that Sunday school, overused way. He shows up when there’s nothing left, when the odds are stupidly stacked, and He comes through without borrowing anybody’s help.
That’s the kind of God I serve.
Happy new month! And a blessed first Sunday in June to you.
